Sing Inside’s work in London is always developing, and we are currently pursuing new relationships with prisons within the city. If you work within the prison system at a prison in London, and would be keen to set up a partnership, please contact us!
We have numerous opportunities for London-based volunteers, a varied group who come from universities, various businesses and choirs. These volunteers travel to day long-visits usually led by a member of the Executive Committee. Some of these are weekdays, some weekends. Regular locations include Essex, Stafford and Wolverhampton, with further opportunities starting soon in Surrey. You can get involved as a volunteer on our visits by signing up to our mailing list here.
If you sing with a choir, or are a student at a London-based university keen to help us develop more opportunities in London, please get in touch with firstname.lastname@example.org. He can discuss our plans for future work in London and how further volunteer commitment would work.
Sing Inside has also provided a more regular set of workshops in HMP Thameside, where our Head of musical development Jonathan has run regular workshops through the faith centre. Prisoners are introduced to vocal technique and church music skills through a broad range of repertoire in a morning rehearsal before these skills are put into practice in the afternoon as they form the church choir for Roman Catholic Mass. The choir performs as a standalone ensemble during the service, performing to the rest of the congregation during communion, and leads the congregation in singing the hymns and Mass setting. External singers also join forces with this choir for special occasions such as the annual carol service. If you would be interested in finding out more about this, please contact Jonathan.
