HMP Chelmsford, December 2018

Our trip to HMP Chelmsford in the run up to Christmas was Sing Inside’s first there, and several of the volunteers’ first time in a prison; it was a really interesting experience for everyone.

We had a great time learning Christmas carols with the inmates, as well as some popular songs including ‘Winter Wonderland’. After the workshop (and plenty of tea breaks, during which we had the opportunity to chat to the residents taking part) we performed what we had learned in the prison’s carol service, accompanied by the Salvation Army band.

We were really struck by how much some of the inmates’ confidence grew during the course of the day - a particular highlight was one man’s solo at the start of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’, especially as he said that he hadn’t sung since primary school!

Everyone we met was hugely welcoming, and their enthusiasm made the day fantastic. We’re looking forward to returning to HMP Chelmsford!

Big thanks to Maisie for organising the visit and leading the workshop so wonderfully!
